How Do You Program a Garage Door Opener?

If you ever Googled “how do you program a garage door opener?” you’re heading for disappointment. Why? Because the first few SERPs (Search Engine Page Results) simply give you the unhelpful answer: you can’t. And it makes sense.

On many remote-operated appliances, the main device only has on and off switches. The more delicate functions are on the remote controller, so you cannot use your device without it.

Programming Your Vehicle to the Garage Door Opener

Once the professionals at Door Doctor have installed your garage door and programmed your machine, you now have to “teach” your garage door opener to connect with the remote device in your car.

Step 1:

First of all, press the “learn” button on the back of your ceiling-mounted garage door opener. If using a Liftmaster machine, the “learn” button, located on the back of your machine, will be square. And the “learn” buttons are usually yellow, red/orange, or purple. Apart from that, the button will say “learn button” if using a genie.

Do not hold this button down, and keep in mind that the single press of this button should be brief and firm. If you do hold it down, it will erase all of the programming in the machine, and you’ll have to reprogram all the remote controls, and that’s not a fun process.

Step 2:

Secondly, press the button on the remote control quickly and hold it down for a moment. If your car has a built-in button, you’ll need some help pressing that button.

Step 3:

Programming the remote to your automatic garage door opener only takes a few seconds. When the automatic garage door opener accepts the code, the light on the machine may flash briefly, and you might hear an audible click.

Yep, it’s that easy!

Finally, click to close.

You can’t program an automatic garage door opener without a remote control, but you can certainly use your remote transmitter to reset the garage door opener buttons inside your car. And you can even use an electronic keypad to control your door without a remote.

  • For control boxes, you should press the two “end buttons” to clear previous settings. You can then use the remote controller to sync your car buttons.
  • For keypads, you have to press the arrow buttons and the program buttons simultaneously. You can also restore the brand’s default code before feeding your own.
